Christmas is the most magical time of the year… and baby’s first Christmas is the most magical Christmas of them all.

No matter whether you have been blessed with a new arrival just in time for Christmas or your little one was born sometime throughout the year, baby’s first Christmas is a wonderful time to start a new Christmas tradition for your family.

While they may not be able to really get into the tradition as a baby, having that tradition throughout the years as they grow up will give you so many beautiful memories and moments to look back on. Here are 14 ideas to get you started thinking about your own special Christmas traditions.

Give a Christmas Eve box

In your Christmas Eve box, you can put anything from a special Christmas book to a note from Santa, a special Christmas treat, a Christmas decoration or even a little gift. As your baby gets older you can change what is in the Christmas Eve box to suit their age. It’s also a nice idea to add a little something they can leave out for Santa and his reindeer.

Decorate a gingerbread house

This isn’t a great activity to do with a newborn baby but it sure is a lot of fun with kids. There is no harm in starting early… you can call it practising your technique! You can pick up gingerbread house making kits at the local supermarket so you don’t even need to do the baking.

Visit the local Christmas lights

Pop baby in the pram or strap them into their car seat and head off for a walk around the local area to look at all the Christmas lights. The stimulation of the lights might keep them awake for longer but the experience is worth it.

Do some Christmas crafts

There are so many great Christmas craft ideas on Pinterest that you can tailor to the age of your baby. Each year you could create a handprint decoration made from salt dough or fingerprint Christmas trees.

Make your own Christmas wrapping paper

This is not only a lovely tradition, but it will also save you money on wrapping paper and is a beautiful personalised touch.

Adopt an Elf on the Shelf

Elf on the Shelf is such a fun tradition that just gets better each year as your kids get more and more into the spirit of Christmas.

Take a photo with Santa

A Santa photo with a little baby is probably the last happy Santa photo you get for a few years - Santa can be a little bit terrifying for toddlers! That’s a good excuse to jump in the photo yourself so be prepared.

Follow the “want/need/wear/read” gift philosophy

This is a great gift philosophy that makes it really easy to buy Christmas gifts and not go too over the top… especially for a little baby who likely doesn’t need all that much at Christmas time!

Start a Christmas book collection

With so many gorgeous Christmas books available, why not start collecting them? Start with a board book for your baby and add a different book every year.

Donate unwanted toys

This may not be so easy for a little baby, but a good idea each year to stay on top of your toy clutter is to donate any unwanted toys before Christmas. You can either leave them in a sack for Santa to take or find a local charity who will accept them.

Buy new Christmas pyjamas

Christmas is your chance to be a little bit extra and Christmas pyjamas are the way to do it… even better if they are matching for the whole family.

Collect a different ornament each year

As a family, you can collect ornaments each year to represent the year. Start with baby’s first Christmas and add to it year by year.

Open a present on Christmas Eve

Who doesn’t love opening an early present? Each year on Christmas Eve you could set aside a special gift that you open up. It could be a gift for the whole family or something special for each person.

Watch a Christmas movie

Whether you choose The Grinch, Elf, The Polar Express or something else, having a movie you watch together is a lovely tradition… just choose carefully as you will be watching the same movie every year!

Merry Christmas from Mother’s Choice

Whatever tradition you choose to adopt, don’t forget to enjoy the little moments… your baby ripping the Christmas presents open, seeing their eyes light up at the Christmas tree, that first taste of a prawn at Christmas lunch.

From our Mother’s Choice family to yours, wishing you a very Merry Christmas. We look forward to another year of keeping your precious cargo safe as you go about life’s little journey.
